The Bee Gees: A Tale of Two Bands

When Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities in 1859, there was not a thought this phrase could be modified over 120 years later in reference to A Tale of Two Bands. Dickens opened his great novel with the famous lines, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Ironically, this may also reflect on the band, who is the focus of tonight’s show, the Bee Gees (Barry, Robin, and Maurice) and may explain why during their acceptance speech into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Barry Gibb stated “We are in fact the enigma with a stigma. We know this. We’re aware of it. We hear it every day. We live with it. We have suffered. But tonight we have come home with this honor.”
As to A Tale of Two Bands, in the late 1960s and early 1970s they were especially successful as pop balladeers with Robin’s lead vocals being a hallmark of their earlier hits. After a seemingly long hiatus, they re-emerged in the mid 1970s with an entirely different sound led by Barry’s R & B falsetto vocal and bringing disco to the mainstream and a cultural impact throughout the world. How big of an impact you may ask? To the point that numerous rock artists from the Rolling Stones to KISS to McCartney and even the Grateful Dead to name a few did the unthinkable and released disco-flavored singles in the late 1970s.
